FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ST. LOUIS, MO – February 21, 2025 – For the second year in a row, Dierbergs Markets is proud to launch a charitable initiative aimed at making a significant impact on healthcare in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains—an area devastated by civil war, famine, and drought.
Beginning Tuesday, February 25, through Monday, April 7, customers will have the opportunity to support African Mission Healthcare by participating in Dierbergs’ Heart of Nuba register campaign. One hundred percent of donations will go directly to providing life-changing healthcare to the people of the Nuba Mountains.
Dr. Tom Catena, an American Physician, co-founded Gidel Mother of Mercy Hospital, a 435-bed facility that opened in 2008 in the war-torn Nuba Mountains—one of the most remote and underserved regions in the world. As the only surgeon for three million people, Dr. Catena operates the sole referral hospital for more than 44 million Africans in need of advanced medical care.
Dierbergs was introduced to Dr. Catena’s mission in 2024 through St. Louis-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Coyle, a board member of African Mission Healthcare and a passionate advocate for Dr. Catena’s life-saving work. Last year, with the incredible support of our customers and community, Dierbergs raised over $72,000. This amount was generously matched by Dr. Coyle and his wife, Cindy, bringing the total donation to $144,000.
“Our community has shown time and again how generous and compassionate they are,” said Greg Dierberg, President and CEO of Dierbergs. “By partnering with African Mission Healthcare, we can continue to help deliver vital medical care to those who need it most.”
Customers can choose to participate in store by rounding up at the register, Dierbergs Rewards members will have the opportunity to donate their points online at Dierbergs.com/rewards or in the Dierbergs App, or anyone can donate online at https://africanmissionhealthcare.org/donation/dierbergs2025/.
A gift of any amount has a tremendous impact:
– $2 treats a child with life-threatening malaria
– $5 provides life-saving medicine for a mother in labor
– $10 supports a young child in the hospital for a day
Additionally, Dr. James Coyle and his wife Cindy will once again be matching every dollar donated, up to $100,000.
“On behalf of the people of the Nuba Mountains, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dierbergs, the St. Louis community, and the Coyle family for their incredible generosity,” said Dr. Tom Catena. “Amid the ongoing hardships, our hospital is often the only option for advanced medical care, and your donations help us deliver life-saving treatment to those who have nowhere else to turn.”
