Skip the Bowl & Grab the Pint

All About Healthier Ice Cream

We’ve all done it. Buy the pint of ice cream, sit down to watch a movie, and look down to see you’ve eaten the whole thing. Why not enjoy more moments like these guilt-free? Numerous brands have tailored their recipes and created ice creams with attributes that don’t make you feel too bad about eating a little more than your proper serving. Trish, Dierbergs registered nutritionist, shares more insight on healthier ice cream brands and finding one that works best for you!

When choosing the best ice cream for you, you first need to make a decision: low calorie/less sugar or more protein/fiber. Some better-for-you ice cream varieties provide a higher protein and fiber count that benefit you by making you feel fuller longer. Lower calorie and less sugar ice creams also tend to have lower protein than you may be looking for. It’s also good to keep in mind serving sizes. A serving size is a ½ cup, so it’s good to pay attention to serving size and calories on the back of the carton, not on the front. Remember – it’s still ice cream, so moderation is always a good plan.

Below we’ve analyzed (taste tested for quality control of course) some healthier ice cream options, so you can indulge and enjoy without that guilty feeling!

The Results
Arctic Zero Frozen Desserts
Technically not ice cream because it contains no milk, Arctic Zero has an airy, icy consistency and a flavorful finish. Calories range from 150-300 per pint! It's lactose free, gluten free, fat free, non GMO plus has added fiber.
Ben & Jerry's Moo-Phoria Ice Cream
Kosher, no GMOs, no artificial sweeteners, and no high fructose corn syrup! Normally, Ben & Jerry's pints run between 1000-1200 calories, but with Moo-phoria, you’ll be getting half that with 560-640 calories per pint.
Chilly Cow
With two 8 oz. containers per package, Chilly Cow is designed to help you not eat that whole pint at once. Each container is between 180-190 calories (so 360-380 for both). It does have a great ice-cream-like consistency while saving calories!
Enlightened the Good for You Ice Cream
This high protein ice cream has one of the best consistencies! It ranges from 240-400 per pint with a ½-cup serving between 60-100 calories. It’s low in fat and saturated fat and contains skim milk, corn fiber, milk protein isolate and monk fruit extract.
Our Favorite
Breyer's Delights
If you haven’t hit your protein goal for the day, this will do it. Available in pints and cups, Breyer’s Delights has 20g of protein per pint and contains only 260-330 calories. In our opinion, this is the best-tasting low-calorie ice cream!
