It never ceases to amaze me how exhausting a trip to the grocery store can be with children in tow. Shopping with my kids is never quite perfect, but here are some hints that I have found helpful to get the shopping done and emerge with my mind in tact:
-
If you have toddlers or older children, communicate the rules before you go into the store. And if possible, let them know in advance how you can reward them for good behavior (a lollipop, a show when they get home, or a special treat you know they'll enjoy).
- If you have a baby or toddler, use a cart liner. It goes right over the seat portion of the cart and you can still buckle them in safely. It is great for attaching soft books and toys to keep them busy while shopping. And even better, if your baby or toddler is like mine, she won't be able to suck on the cart anymore (YUCK!)!
- Pack a snack- If you use the cart liner, you place the cereal/ snack directly on the liner. If you have an older child, pack a snack in a zip lock bag. But don't forget the drinks!
- Ask the child(ren) to "help" you- keeping the little ones in the cart, but have them point to the items you are trying to find. With the many vivid colors from Produce to Seafood to Meat, the grocery store can really be an educational experience for a child.
- When you have more than one "helper" with you, utilize the car carts or the carts with toddler seats on the back. The older one can keep your little one entertained as you shop.
- It seems like my kids always melt down as we approach the bakery and dairy departments. If this happens to you too, visit our bakery for a free cookie!
- You finally made it the checkout and your kids are probably restless by now. Ask the checker for a free sticker. It is amazing what a sticker or two will do to help you make it through that last 5 minutes!
- Make it easy on yourself and ask for a carryout. And then wish you could take the courtesy clerk home with you!
