St. Louis, July 22, 2008 – Following a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory briefing Monday on the ongoing investigation in the Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak, Dierbergs Markets has pulled and discarded all fresh, raw jalapeno and serrano chile peppers from its produce departments and prepared-food areas, including its Central Kitchen, delis and salad bars.
The FDA is asking consumers to avoid eating raw jalapeno peppers or foods made from raw jalapeno peppers until further notice in order to prevent additional cases of illness. This recommendation does not include cooked or pickled jalapeno peppers.
The FDA continues to advise people in high risk populations, such as elderly persons, infants and people with impaired immune systems, to avoid eating raw serrano peppers until further notice.
Customers may return any jalapenos or serrano peppers purchased at any Dierbergs store for a full refund.
