Born in St. Louis, Carolyn Pokorny has been cooking all of her life and loves sharing her enthusiasm with those she teaches. When she was younger, Carolyn’s parents didn’t hesitate to let her and her siblings cook, and she was constantly playing around in the kitchen and experimenting with food. The passion for cooking she gained from her time in the kitchen led her to study Home Economics in college.
Carolyn continued cooking as she started a family, and when her three kids were young, she started catering. Carolyn learned from her catering jobs that presentation is important in any kind of cooking, and when she started teaching at Dierbergs, she educated her classes on how to cook well and present well. As a result, students would ask her advice, and Carolyn began helping to plan their parties. She provided the tools people needed, but rarely did any of the cooking.
Carolyn constantly works to make sure that her students find the fun in cooking and are able to take recipes home, make them their own and get credit for making great food. Outside of the kitchen, she enjoys skiing , especially in Colorado, and loves taking care of her two grandkids who sometimes help her cook.
Carolyn’s Cooking Tip: “Actions are contagious, so be enthusiastic about cooking and other people will be, too.”
