Catalan Tomato Bread


3 cloves garlic, peeled
½ teaspoon coarse salt
⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 loaf (8 ounces) French baguette, cut into ¾-inch-thick slices
4 homegrown or vine-ripened tomatoes, halved crosswise


Using sharp knife, mince garlic; sprinkle with salt while mashing to make paste. In small bowl, combine garlic paste with olive oil. Brush lightly over both sides of bread slices. Discard any remaining oil.

Working in batches, place bread slices on grid over medium-high heat; grill until lightly toasted and grill marks appear, about 1 to 2 minutes per side. Remove from grill; immediately rub one side of each bread slice with cut edge of tomato, allowing bread to absorb tomato pulp.

Serve at room temperature, or warm briefly on grill before serving.
