Dierbergs Market at Des Peres to Open July 31

It looks like a Dierbergs. It feels like a Dierbergs. But this is not a typical Dierbergs. And that was the plan from the beginning.
Dierbergs will open its long-awaited Des Peres store with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at 8:35 a.m. The store opens at 9 a.m. Regular store hours are Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. until midnight, and Sunday, 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.
The supermarket, located on the south side of Manchester Road, one mile east of I-270, is a free-standing 75,000-square-foot store. It sits on approximately 6.5 acres, occupying a full city block of Des Peres. HBD Construction is the general contractor for the project.
Dierbergs submitted its proposed site plans to the city in fall 2009. With plans for three levels, including a mezzanine dining area, it was evident from the beginning that this would be a different Dierbergs.
Customers will recognize the difference when they pull in to park—most likely—under the store. The new store has the distinction of being St. Louis County’s only supermarket with covered parking, with space for 175 cars. The garage is unusually bright with 40-percent of the perimeter exposed to natural light. Illustrations and drawings by local artists decorate the outer walls and interior columns, creating a bright, inviting weather-resistant place to park.
Two escalators take customers to and from the main level of the store while a third cart-dedicated conveyor—the “cartolator”—moves customer carts from the main level to the garage. The cart conveyor presented a unique supermarket challenge.
“Prior to our store, cartolators could not accommodate a bottom cart shelf for large packages,” said Dierbergs President Greg Dierberg. “That’s a huge inconvenience for customers. We’re now the first supermarket in the U.S. that has a bottom shelf cart that can be used on a conveyor.”
In addition to customer convenience, the protected parking allowed Dierbergs to dedicate approximately 23 percent of its acreage to landscaped green space, including a green streetscape running the length of the store along Manchester Road.
Another green concept keeps that grass green: Dierbergs Market at Des Peres is the first store in the metro area to have what the Metropolitan Sewer District calls a rainwater harvesting tank, a modern moniker for a cistern. Dierbergs’ cistern is 67-feet long, 10-feet wide, 10-feet deep and holds 45,000 gallons of water. Rainwater collected from the roof will be used to irrigate grass and landscaping elements on the property, a natural purification method.
Greg Dierberg is very proud of the green initiatives. “When we opened our Arnold store in 2008, we introduced a variety of energy-management programs, like enclosed beer and dairy cases, and energy efficient, motion-controlled LED lighting, all of which can be found in our Des Peres location. We build on our sustainability efforts with every new store.”
There’s plenty more to be found at Dierbergs Des Peres. The surface lot entrance of the new-store opens into the Farmer’s Market Hall that emphasizes fresh local and organic produce under 38-foot high.
From there, customers can expect all of the services and features that are the hallmark of Dierbergs stores, plus more: a bigger, better deli with new made-fresh offerings; an expanded Whole Life department with natural, organic and gluten-free products; a fresh bakery with a European pastry chef; full-service meat and seafood departments with expanded product offerings; unmatched grocery variety; and a pharmacy and florist.
“Our intent was to meet and then exceed customer expectations of what makes a store a Dierbergs store,” said Greg Dierberg. “So we focused on areas of growing interest such as meal convenience, wine selection, culinary education, and health and wellness. The result is a store designed not only to be shopped but also experienced.”
What else is new?
- Three French Hens: The popular Wildwood boutique, known for European antiques, home furnishings and accessories, is opening a store in a shared space with Dierbergs Florist and Gifts, the No. 1 FTD florist in Missouri.
- Cheese Monger: A full-time cheese monger oversees an expanded domestic and international cheese section.
- Dry Aged Beef: The store will offer premium steak cuts of dry-aged beef, in addition to its all-natural line of USDA Choice, Midwest Raised Angus Beef.
- St. Luke’s Convenient Care: An in-store facility staffed by nurse practitioners to treat minor illnesses and injuries, open 7 days a week.
- Wellness Programs: A dedicated on-site Wellness Team, comprising representatives from Dierbergs Pharmacy, St. Luke’s Convenient Care, Dierbergs Whole Life Department and Dierbergs Culinary Event Center. The group is charged with a variety of wellness initiatives, from healthy-eating programs to culinary assistance for individuals with specific dietary restrictions.
- Remote Pharmacy Drive-Thru: Set up in the covered parking area, the drive-thru uses video cameras for consultation with the Dierbergs pharmacists.
- The Evening Tap: Wine by the glass and bottled beer sold from 5:30 pm. until 8:30 p.m. daily on the mezzanine.
- Try a Wine before You Buy the Bottle: Wine-tasting dispensers provide an opportunity to purchase 1 oz., 2 oz. and 4 oz. samples. At any one time, the in-store sampling list comprises 28 wines.
- Live Music: Mezzanine-level entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

- Bento Asian Grill and Sushi Bar: Family-owned, locally owned Bento Sushi, Dierbergs’ company-wide Sushi Chefs, expanded its operations to include a variety of Asian dishes takeout or enjoyment on the Mezzanine-level dining area.
- Paninis and Pizzettas: Freshly baked in Dierbergs’ Turbo Chef ovens for preparation in 3 – 5 minutes.
- Bob’s BBQ: Dierbergs Des Peres store is the latest location for apple- and cherry-wood smoked barbecue, smoked fresh daily in a smoker on the lot.
- Hand-Tossed Salads and Baked Subs round out an ever-expanding kitchen menu.
- European Bakery: Dierbergs third, this newest is staffed by Dierbergs European pastry chef Katrina Meredith.
- Chris Cakes Pancakes: All you can eat pancakes on Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m., featuring the flippin’ fun of Chris Cakes, beginning August 11th.
When Dierbergs Manchester store opened in 1978, it boasted the first supermarket cooking school in the U.S., a product of Bob Dierberg’s long-held understanding that cooking starts in the supermarket. That concept thrives at Dierbergs Des Peres in the form of a one-of-a-kind culinary gathering place with cooking classes, wellness programs, interactive wine tastings and events, and group programs.
Tracing its roots to a country store founded in Creve Coeur, Mo., in 1854, Dierbergs Markets is now a fourth-generation, family-owned business operating 24 metropolitan-area stores with more than 4,000 Associates.
- The facility will be managed by Culinary Event Center Chef Marianne Moore, who comes to Dierbergs from St. Louis’ Four Seasons Hotel.
- The Culinary Event Center houses Dierbergs sixth cooking school, with counter and table seating to accommodate 34 participants.
- With six in the St. Louis area, Dierbergs operates more cooking schools in one market than any other U.S. retailer.
- Multiple LCD screens for up-close cooking demonstration viewing for all class participants.
- Wi-Fi and interactive capabilities for Skype wine tastings and cooking demonstrations with nationally recognized chefs.
- The facility can host private events, birthday parties, wedding and baby showers, corporate meeting and team-building cooking activities.
